"Facing a Silent Epidemic in Health Care: Workplace Violence" is a crucial webinar designed for health care professionals seeking to address and mitigate the rising threat of workplace violence in medical settings. This session will focus on the need for collaboration across multiple disciplines to build a comprehensive infrastructure for both preventing and effectively responding to workplace violence. Participants will explore proven processes for assessing and managing high-risk behavioral patients, as well as strategies for handling repeat offenders who pose ongoing threats. Additionally, the webinar will introduce practical tools that can be implemented to align patient behavioral expectations with organizational policies, helping to create safer, more respectful environments for both health care workers and patients.

Speaker:

Karen Garvey, MPA/HCA, BSN, RN, DFASHRM, CPHRM, CPPS, serves as Vice President for Safety & Clinical Risk Management for Parkland Health in Dallas, Texas. Responsibilities include health system oversight of Regulatory & Accreditation, Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management, and Quality & Safety Education. She’s Executive Sponsor for SPARKs (Supporting Parkland Staff) Peer Support Program and Chairperson for enterprise Workforce Safety Initiatives. She’s active on local, state, and national committees to collectively address violence and is often requested to speak in forums about interventions to address the issue. In March 2023, Karen testified in support of the proposed Texas Senate Bill 240 to protect health care workers against violence which was unanimously supported and signed into law in May 2023.

 

J.D. Buchert, M.Ed., MS, MSN(s), RN, CNOR, has been in health care for nearly 40 years. He started as a combat medic in the US Army and later became an Army Nurse serving in sixteen combat missions where he was awarded a bronze star for heroism and a purple heart, among numerous other honors. J.D. works at Parkland Hospital in Dallas as the Workforce Safety Manager where his primary focus is Workplace Violence Prevention. He is active on multiple shared governance councils and interdisciplinary committees including the Nursing Research, Quality, Leadership, Safe Environment and Preserving the Environment of Care to name a few. He is active in his community sitting on three non-profit boards of directors, and volunteering hundreds of hours a year to non-profit charities. JD currently sits on the National Board of Directors for Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and serves as president of the Texas Collaboration of Perioperative Nurses, and former three-time president of the Dallas AORN chapter. As a member of the Texas Nursing Legislation Action Committee, he focuses on the passage of surgical smoke evacuation legislation for Texas health care systems. J.D. has recently completed his fourth master’s degree and started his Doctoral studies January 2025.
