In this engaging webinar, Volunteer Patient and Family Advisors: An Underused Source of Risk Information, risk professionals will explore the untapped potential of Patient and Family Advisors in enhancing risk management strategies. This session will focus on how including Patient Advisors can significantly improve risk identification and mitigation efforts within healthcare organizations. Through real-world examples, attendees will gain insight into the various roles and functions these advisors perform, as well as the key success factors for effectively matching them with committees and projects.

The webinar will also highlight how one organization currently leverages Patient Advisors to contribute to risk identification, and explore additional ways to integrate them within appropriate risk parameters. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with the tools to identify new opportunities for incorporating patient and family insights to strengthen their organization's risk management efforts and improve overall care outcomes.

Speaker:

Geri Amori, PhD, ARM, DFASHRM, CPHRM, has more than 35 years’ experience in healthcare Risk Management, nine years in behavioral health, and 40 years as an educator. She is Principal of Communicating Healthcare through which she works to bring understanding and application of our uniquely human communication psychology to individuals and organizations.   


Geri served Coverys/Med-IQ for 15 years and 18 years with the University of Vermont. Best known for her work with the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, Geri is a Distinguished Fellow, Faculty Emeritus, and Past President of the Society.  Holding a PhD in counselor education from UF, and a master’s in counseling and human systems from FSU, Geri is nationally recognized for her work in furthering knowledge and awareness of communication in health care.

Vicki Mascareno Nelson, M.Ed Patient Experience Partner, Service to others has been a core value for Vicki ever since she was a young girl growing up. Realizing she could use her voice and experiences to positively impact the lives of others, she has applied these ideals in both her professional and volunteer careers. Vicki’s volunteer involvement has included hospice, shelters for families experiencing homelessness, animal rescue, Fresh Air Fund, and being a Patient Family Advisor at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital. After twenty years as a school counselor, she transitioned to health care where she now coordinates the Patient and Family – Centered Care Program.
