More than a Signature: Informed Consent
ASHRM On-Demand Webinar
CE Credit: 1
Domain: Claims & Litigation
Level: Practitioner
This webinar will help risk managers train clinicians on informed consent as a process of communication and shared decision-making-- not just a document.
True informed consent is much more than a signature on a form. It is a process of communication, shared decision-making, mutual expectation-setting, and respect for a person's autonomy. Without it, patients are at risk for health consequences they don't understand, and providers are at risk for liability claims. This program discusses the four components of informed consent, provides strategies to engage patients in decision-making, outlines how to document the process, and discusses how to manage informed refusal.
Objectives:
- • State the legal and ethical obligations of obtaining informed consent.
- • Identify strategies and best practices for obtaining informed consent (or refusal) and documenting the discussion.
- • Examine actual malpractice cases where informed consent was not obtained.
